Christian Scali & Stephen Lewis
The Creators Of Villa Ardore
Christian and Stephen bought and refurbished the 500-year-old farmhouse and barn into what Villa Ardore is today–a private property that exudes quiet, luxury but that still refers back to its roots as a Tuscan farmhouse.Christian is an Italian citizen with dual U.S. citizenship, and Stephen is a U.S. citizen with permanent Italian residence, and they wanted to create a property that has all of the amenities that they had become used to in their home that they live in during part of the year in Los Angeles without diminishing the farmhouse’s Tuscan authenticity, or its connection to the Chianti region that they have fallen so in love with. They hope that while you are here, you will feel the love that they poured into the detailed restoration, and that you will come to think of Villa Ardore, as they do, as your Tuscan home.

OUR STORY
When Christian Scali and his spouse decided to buy Villa Ardore and make it what it has become today, it was more than an enterprise; it was homecoming.
That’s because the Scali family has deep roots in Tuscany, going back to the medieval era when they were one of Florence’s most important banking families. Because Florence was the financial center of Europe at that time, this made the Scalis one of the most powerful families on the continent. The family’s banking empire, which specialized in public finance, provided funds for governments, Church officials, and royal families throughout the continent, from the Mediterranean to England. The Scali crest can still be found today on the Santa Maria Novella cathedral in Florence’s historic center, and the family’s palazzo still stands on the street that bears their name.
The European economic downturn of the early 1300s, forced the family to relocate to the ancient Calabrian village of Ardore. They remained in Ardore until the twentieth century, when much of the family, including the grandparents of co-founder Christian Scali, emigrated to the United States.
Christian Scali and Stephen Lewis have honored this history with the renovation of what is today Villa Ardore. Like the Scali family, the villa started with a proud Florentine history, its most ancient section having served as a watch tower for the Medici forces in their wars with Siena. When the wars ended, the tower was converted to a farmhouse and was added to until it became a sprawling family estate. However, by the mid-twentieth century, the property was abandoned and was left in ruins. [photo of this?]
The property was saved when, in the 1980s, it was converted to a bed and breakfast, which it remained until The Scali-Lewis family bought it in 2021. After a more than two million Euro restoration, the property is now a private home worthy of the family’s storied history, honoring the villa’s deep roots in Tuscan history without sacrificing the comfort and luxury for which the family has long been famous.
